Good Friday: An Easter Devotion

good friday

Good Friday.

When I was a kid I never understood how a day that honors such horrible events could be called good. To be honest, I still grapple with the suffering of Jesus and how that is good for me.

I don’t want to talk at you too much in this post because I think it is important for us all to examine our hearts and take time to meditate on what Jesus’ death on the cross really means to us. First, let’s do some reading. Get your bibles out (or click the links) and let’s read what the scriptures have to say about Good Friday.

Isaiah 53:3-9

Matthew 27:11-51

John 3:16-17

Romans 5:6-10

Obviously there are many more passages surrounding the events of Good Friday, but you don’t have to read much before you start to understand that God did this out of love. For us. Even though we are full of sin.

When Jesus finally succumbed to his injuries and gave up his spirit he said, “it is finished.” With his last dying breath he gave us a perfect gift. He gave us access to the Father. No more rituals, no more uncleanliness, no more sacrifices. The Earth physically shook because the veil that separated us from God was torn. It no longer exists. We can come to Him, broken sinners that we are, and find rest. All because Jesus went to the cross for us.

Take some time today to sit in the presence of the One who covered all our transgressions.
